Matthew 23:9 - "Call no one on earth your father; you have but one Father in
heaven."

I've always taken this literally, so I call my male parent "Dad," (that would be the legalism stance) but I've realized it goes beyond that. The point is that God must occupy that position of father figure to me: I must be able to position my earthly father below Him and exalt my Heavenly Father to the most intimate position in my life. Calling God "Father" distances me from Him, since that isn't what I call my own dad. I must be able to call God "Dad" with the full meaning that accompanies what that means to me, except without any tainting of my earthly dad's characteristics. That means I should trust Him to provide for me, to keep me safe from enemies, to counsel me in wisdom and truth, and to be the One I model my life after. All that and more.
